about

“Stranger” is a song that is inspired by my experience touring as a side musician with many bands, playing on multi-city festival tours like Edgefest and Lilith Fair. I encountered many wonderful people on these tours and in many cases we would all hang out together, regardless of who was famous and who wasn’t.

There’s something that happens, especially during festivals, where even the most famous musicians are able to let their guards down. Divides that can often get in the way seem to disappear. “Stranger,” however, is about the folks that I’ve run into who’ve had a difficult time letting go of these perceived divides.

This track begins calmly, but there is a point when it all falls apart and the real person comes out. I wrote “Stranger” to express some of the feelings that can come up when faced with this kind of situation.

I think that for some folks, it’s easy to become insulated by success and it can be challenging to adjust to the reality of everyday life. Close relationships can be difficult to maintain, bridges get burned, and the damage to themselves and the people around them can be hard to undo.

“Stranger” is written from the perspective of someone who is close to one of these people. I've been quite lucky with the people that I've personally worked with. These are some of the best people I know and I’ve been able to maintain friendships that hold strong to this day.

lyrics

why’d you ever go and have to be like that
hangin’ on to something that you’ll never get back
and you’re holding on
and you’re holding on

why’d you ever go and have to be like that
hangin’ on to something that you’ll never get back
and you’re holding on
and you’re holding on

you keep it quiet
everyone they say that you’re
the one that shook them up
the one that tore them down
you keep it quiet
everyone can write about
the things you did
the lies you told
the hearts you broke

why’d you ever go and have to be like that
hangin’ on to something that you’ll never get back
and you’re holding on
and you’re holding on

no one ever said it had to be like that
holding on to something that you’ll never get back
and you’re holding on
you’re holding on

you keep it quiet
everyone they say that you’re
the one that shook them up
the one that tore them down
you keep it quiet
everyone can write about
the things you did
the lies you told
the hearts you broke
